Missa Festiva Voice Notation Notes

The choral score for Missa Festiva does not include accompaniment systems.  Dr. Holcomb wanted the VP Chorus to practice with the organ accompaniment because oftentimes the accompaniment offers little help in supporting the singer with their respective voice part.  The video notation tracks were made using the conductor’s score, which has both the choral systems and organ accompaniment.  Unfortunately, the number of measures per system does not match between the two music scores, except for the Benedictus movement.   Both scores have no measure numbers.  The conductor score has no rehearsal marks, while the choral score does.  To help the VP singer more easily navigate between the choral score and the notation tracks (conductor score), the following has been added to the notation voice video tracks:

  • A number in large font has been placed above the appropriate measure number to indicate the first measure of a choral score page

  • A section character “§ “ has been placed above a notation track measure that corresponds with the beginning of a choral score system

  • Choral score rehearsal marks have been added to the notation video tracks.

It is highly recommended that the VP singer number the measures in their Choral score or at least the first measure of each system.

Take special note of the treatment of the pronunciation of eleison, specifically the “I” in the first movement Kyrie.  Text notes have been placed in the video voice notations to guide you with the pronunciation of el-i-son in this movement.  Please mark your Choral score accordingly.

And finally,  since the Missa Festiva is published in all open score format with no 2nd voicing other than very occasional octave split between Baritone and Bass voices, it was thought to be unnecessary to use the traditional notation note colors of black, red, green and blue to depict individual voicing.
